I still say use 10-40 motorcycle oil. Automobile oil is formulated for a different kind of engine and doesn't work well in bikes. Foaming is only one problem you have with auto oil. DO NOT use Harley oil in your Savage, it's for an entirely different lubrication system.
The most important thing is to change your oil and filter often. If you use expensive synthetic oil, you'll be tempted to "stretch" the time between changes and that is a big mistake. Synthetic motorcycle oil may be the best thing in the world to use but if you don't change it, it's like running muddy water through your engine.
